Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is a severe form of pregnancy sickness that affects up to 3% of pregnant women.
Symptoms include severe nausea and vomiting, along with excessive thirst, drowsiness, and dark yellow or brown urine. HG can lead to dehydration so it's important to seek help if your symptoms do not settle, or if they prevent you from doing your day-to-day activities.
It is not known what causes HG, but research suggests that some women get pregnancy sickness worse than others due to genetic differences, which causes them to have higher levels of a hormone called GDF-15.
GDF-15 is a hormone produced by the placenta that causes a loss of appetite and nausea.
There is no cure, but steps like eating small amounts frequently and avoiding foods that trigger symptoms can help. If this does not settle your symptoms, your gynaecologist can sometimes prescribe anti-sickness medication.
